Abstract
The eriophyid mite Vasates fockeui (Nal et Trt) (Acarida: Eriophyidae) is present each year in the production of plum nursery trees and represents a major pest.
The infested trees exhibit the change in coloration, mild inward rolling and brittleness of leaves, brooming and stunted growth.
Based on our experience, Cacanska Rodna is one of the plum cultivars most susceptible to this mite.
In 1994 and 1995, the migration of deutogyne females occurred in late April and the first half of May, but only in a very small number of individuals, which is closely related to the temperatures in this period of year.
The population density started to increase in June, reaching maximum in the second half of July and in August.
In 1994, the peak population density was 285.0 mobile forms/cm2 leaf area, and in 1995 in August – 370.4 mobile forms/cm2 leaf area.
The nursery trees measured at the end of the season in these two yearshad an average height of 227.4 cm (in 1994) and 198.0 cm (in 1995). The values for the average diameter were 1.21 and 1.31 cm (in 1994 and 1995, respectively). The average growth increment between July (when the population density rapidly increases) and the end ofthe seasonwas statistically significant.
Coefficient of correlation between the height of nursery trees and population density is less than 1%, and so it can be concluded that the growth of nursery trees has not practically been affected by the attacks of Vasates fockeui.
