Abstract
Plum breeding program in Estonia began after the establishment of the Polli Horticultural Institute in 1945. Julius Eslon was the first plum breeder.
From his breeding work originated the following cultivars: ‘Karksi’, ‘Polli Munaploom’, ‘Suhkruploom’ and one selection ‘Polli Varane’. J.Eslon’s successor A.Jaama concluded the breeding of ‘Julius’, ‘Esloni Varane’ and ‘Polli Viljakas’. A. and E. Jaama bred from beginning of 1964, nine new cultivars: ‘Amitar’, ‘Ave’, ‘Kadri’, ‘Liisu’, ‘Norgen’, ‘Sargen’, ‘Vikana, ‘Vilmitar’ and ‘Vilnor’. Since of 1986 the first attempts in plum breeding were made by Heljo Jänes.
Among several outstanding selections only ‘Kaidi’ has got the name.
Plum breeding program in Polli is continuing.
