IDENTIFICATION AND DISTRIBUTION OF BACTERIAL DISEASE AGENT OF ALMOND TREE CANKER IN ISFAHAN PROVINCE

Abstract
The almond growing area in Isfahan province is over 5,500 ha and almond nut production is 5400 tons annually.
Almond bacterial canker is one of the most important diseases in Iran including Isfahan province.
In order to study stone fruit tree bacterial diseases, fruit orchards of the province were investigated during 2001-2003. Almond trees that showed symptoms such as canker around the bud, blossom blast, die-back and canker in trunk and shoots were sampled.
Sample tissues with above-mentioned symptoms were cultured on nutrient agar containing sucrose. 15 gram negative isolates that had hypersensitivity causal effect in geranium and produced fluorescent pigments on Kings B medium, were selected and studied using LOPAT and GATTa tests and also some other standard bacteriological tests.
The results showed that causal agent of almond bacterial canker and blossom blast in Isfahan can be attributed to Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae. Distribution and occurrence of the bacterium were in Najafabad, Trian and Karvan, Golpayegan, Khansar, Fereydonshahr and around Zayanderood river of Isfahan province.
