IDENTIFICATION AND COLLECTION OF ALMOND SPECIES AND GERMPLASM IN THE CHAHARMAHAL VA BAKHTIARI PROVINCE

Abstract
Almond has been grown from seed for centuries in our county.
Since heterozygosity is seen in the generative propagation of almond, a wide variability is observed and a diverse population is obtained.
In order to identify and collect old varieties and suitable genotypes of almond this work was performed.
Almond species in natural growing areas of county were studied also.
At first, variety and genotypes with growers coordination were tagged; tree, leaves, flowers, fruit and kernels characteristics were recorded.
During 5 years, 5 old almond varieties (Ramazan, Gerduoei, Hasani, Khiari and Noktiz) and 30 suitable almond genotypes were selected.
Recorded data are tabulated on the flowering date, growth habit, vigor, flowers, crop load, shell hardness, percentage of kernel, double kernels and other kernel characteristics.
Varieties and genotypes were budded on bitter almond seedlings and planted in a collection orchard.
Eight almond species (A. communis var ammara, A. scoparia, A. elaeagnifolia, A. orientalis, A. lycioides, A. glauce, A. haussknechtii and A. reuteri) were identified and their seeds collected and planted in the collection orchard.
