CHALLENGES AND SUGGESTIONS FOR IRAN´S PISTACHIO PRODUCTION AND EXPORTS

Abstract
Iran with a wide diversity of climate conditions from north to south and from west to east is a tremendous producer of many horticultural crops and consequently has a great potential in the improvement and exportation of these products.
Pistachio cultivation and production, with a history of hundreds of years in Iran, is a universally known enterprise.
Production and exportation of this product, in spite of the presence of international competitors, is relatively advantageous.
Cultivation of this product and its economic and export features placed it among those exports of high priority which horticulturalists and farmers, especially those who are in more arid areas, increasingly favor cultivating.
However, the fact that horticulturalists are turning to this product and devoting some land and water to its production does not guarantee putting Iran on the top of the list of producers and exporters of this product.
Conducting research in different areas related to this product, especially with the goal of increasing production per unit area along with devising appropriate administrative policies and also looking for new markets should be considered as supporting strategies to improve the economic goals of pistachio production.
This is not just because pistachio is considered as a non-petroleum export item with potential foreign currency absorbing power, but this product is a valuable crop with a great genetic resource in Iran which has its roots in the history of this country.
This paper presents the results of a survey to investigate:
a) The present situation of pistachio production and exportation in Iran,
b) Its relative standing in comparison with other countries,
c) The possibilities of improving its production in different provinces of the country.
