AN ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF THE IMPACT OF EASTERN FILBERT BLIGHT RESISTANT HAZELNUT CULTIVARS IN OREGON, USA

Abstract
Research and development efforts by Oregon State University (OSU) plant breeders have significantly improved the quality of plant stock available for hazelnut producers.
In an OSU economic study completed in 2000, trees began to fruit in year 4 producing approximately 168 kg/ha and 2,666 kg/ha at full production in year 12. Hazelnut cultivars on the market today have been selected for earlier and more uniform fruit bearing resulting in 84 kg/ha in year 3 and 3,144 kg/ha at full production.
In addition to enhanced fruit bearing characteristics, complete resistance to Eastern Filbert Blight (EFB), has been achieved in some hazelnut cultivars.
This breakthrough reduces pesticide applications in hazelnut orchards having a positive impact on the environment and the economic sustainability of producers.
Orchards planted with the EFB susceptible cultivars available in 2000, could expect to generate a positive cash flow, gross income minus cash costs, of US$ 588 per hectare in year 10, compared to US$ 893 in year 7 for the EFB resistant hazelnuts trees available today.
A comparison of the cumulative cash flow in year 11, shows the year all cash cost are recovered in the modern EFB resistant plantings, the EFB resistant planting with a US$ 1,522 per hectare surplus, and the EFB susceptible planting at -US$ 8,926, a difference of US$ 0,448 per hectare.
At the end of the establishment period, the EFB resistant hazelnut orchard returns US$ 4,794 per hectare over cash costs to the grower, as compared to -US$ 7,449 for the EFB susceptible planting, a difference in cumulative cash flow of US$ 12,243. The EFB resistant varieties available to Oregon hazelnut producer enhanced economic feasibility by reduce cash flow demands.
