THE CURRENT STATUS OF THE NEWLY INVASIVE HAZELNUT APHID IN OREGON HAZELNUT ORCHARDS

Abstract
Hazelnuts are produced in many countries, including the United States.
Here total production comprises approximately 15,000 hectares in the Willamette Valley, Oregon.
This accounts for roughly 99 percent of U.S. and 5 percent of world production.
Current key insect pests in this area include filbertworm, Cydia latiferreana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae); filbert aphid, Myzocallis coryli (Goeze) (Homoptera: Aphididae); hazelnut aphid, Corylobium avellanae (Schrank) (Homoptera: Aphididae); filbert leafroller, Archips rosanus L. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae); and obliquebanded leafroller, Choristoneura rosaceana Harris (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae). Of these, filbertworm and filbert aphid are perceived to be the most important.
Before the mid 1980s, the filbert aphid was considered the only aphid pest on hazelnuts in Oregon. C. avellanae, a newly invasive species, was however recorded on hazelnut in the northern Willamette Valley in Oregon by the Oregon Invasive Species Council during October 2003. Recent collections show that this pest has spread.
Preliminary data from several orchards sampled during 2007 show that C. avellanae currently has low levels of parasitism compared to filbert aphid.
Data show that C. avellanae prefers husks to feed on.
In severe cases this feeding preference may negatively impact crop levels.
Levels of hazelnut aphid are therefore cautiously monitored in order to determine changes in species composition.
