Abstract
In Italy, unfortunately, the material for planting new hazelnut orchards can often be obtained by taking out the rooted suckers from plants in the orchard.
This primitive propagation method has serious genetic and phytopathological problems.
However, in the last 15 years, at Langhe (Piedmont), a few nurserymen have applied the mound layering technique with acceptable results.
With the aim of improving these results, some treatments have been investigated on mound layering to a 2-year-old mother plant (Tonda Gentile delle Langhe). The experimental design concerned the use of Agriperlite® as the rooting medium instead of soil for mounding.
The other two treatments included either the water-saver (Hydroretenteur®) polymer or a commercial mycorrhiza (Transplant®) product These were added and blended with the mounding soil.
Immediately after ringing, the rooting hormone (IBAK, at 3000 ppm) was sprayed at the bases of the suckers near the ringed point.
Each treatment was applied to six replicates of 50 mother plants.
At the time of digging, the rooting percentage, rooted suckers and marketable classification were recorded.
A remarkable increase in root mass weight was obtained by adding mycorrhiza and Hydroretenteur® to the mounding soil.
The rooting percentage was significantly increased by mycorrhiza and Agriperlite®. The first class rooted suckers and the marketable percentage were significantly increased by mycorrhiza and Hydroretenteur®. The increase in rooting percentage due to IBAK does not require explanation; the positive effects of Hydroretenteur® could be due to its capacity to maintain a good humidity level in the soil during rooting while the positive effect of mycorrhiza seems to need further investigation.
