Abstract
In the province of Viterbo, the cultivation of hazelnuts represents an agricultural and economic reality of great importance.
This cultivation began in the 1950s and a remarkable increase has been recorded since then, rising from 2000 ha to 20,000 ha at present.
The research illustrates the soil management technique used at present, the implications for cultivation and manuring, pruning, irrigation systems, the phyto-sanitary defence and the specific machines used in each operation.
The operation was carried out by preparing alternate rows in the two years of experimentation; it was decided not to experiment on the whole piece of land, in order to minimize the possible damage that this operation could cause to the roots of the trees which were now near the surface.
By analysing the data obtained, we can see that tilling the land in hazelnut groves brings about an interesting increase in production and an improvement in the shelling yield.
Results shows that the average production per tree is 3 kg in tilled land, and 2,7 kg in untilled land.
The introduction of milling and the reduction of the phenomenon of compaction will create a more suitable environment for the development of the tree and for the quality of the produce.
