INFECTIONS OF BACTERIAL SPOT ON PROCESSING TOMATO IN SOUTHERN ITALY

Abstract
Causal agent of bacterial spot of tomato is Xanthomonas vesicatoria, some years ago reclassified in four species: X. euvesicatoria, X. vesicatoria, X. perforans and X. gardneri.
Xanthomonas-like isolates recovered from diseased tomato fruits, collected in a field in southern Italy in 2009, were identified by biochemical and phytopathological tests.
All the isolates were able to hydrolyze starch, esculin and Tween 80; moreover, gave HR on bean pod and symptoms of bacterial leaf spot on tomato plantlets.
Therefore, Xanthomonas-like isolates belonged to the old phytopathogenic bacteria Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. vesicatoria/X. vesicatoria. MLST analyses confirmed results of biological and biochemical tests.
Differences in disease severity were observed on the different tomato genotypes cultivated in open field.
Among 11 paste cultivars, the highest incidence of diseased fruits was on Kalvert and Tiziano, whereas the lowest incidence was on AB8065 and Perfectpeel. Among 11 cultivars for peeling, the highest incidence was on Docet and Scipio, whereas the lowest was on Player and Gades. No symptoms were observed on tomato fruits of Allflesh 905.
