Abstract
Many aspects of our daily life have changed considerably over the last few years.
The world is smaller and more connected, life is more frenetic, and food has become not only a matter of nutrition but will play an important role in humans health and development sustainability of the agriculture and consequently towards the modern society.
What are the most important items considered in the current tomato industry today?
The world is smaller and more connected, life is more frenetic, and food has become not only a matter of nutrition but will play an important role in humans health and development sustainability of the agriculture and consequently towards the modern society.
What are the most important items considered in the current tomato industry today?
- Growing demand of processing tomatoes with new sustainable approach: environment, crop management, diseases management and soil fertility (total sustainability).
- Assessing traceability and origin indication of products as a way of certification of authenticity (total quality).
- Processing innovation and application of new technologies for food safety and recycling.
- Considering that modern customers have become significantly aware that a successful long life depends on many biological strategies to promote cells survival against many internal and external stimuli (tomato antioxidant activity prospective), including the introduction of novel nutraceutical tomato-based products in their lifestyle.
Italian processing tomato industries usually harvest, pick and process best quality processing tomato, in an integrated from farm to fork concept, counting on all the food chain players in distinguished and controlled protocols.
Despite the existing economic crisis, investment in research, innovation and pre-competitive studies will be essential to assure total quality management towards increasingly sustainable processed products (i.e., diminishing agrochemicals) and indeed to guarantee strategic new tailored made finished products rich in healthy nutrients good for modern society.
