Abstract
In the framework of vegetable seed marketing in the European Community, disease resistance has to be examined before a cultivar can be registered in the National and Common Catalogue of vegetable species.
The Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO) guideline TP/44/3 established minimum conditions and technical protocols for the examination of tomato disease resistances.
ENSE laboratories produced internal resistance test protocols according to the international CPVO guidelines and store collections of reference materials.
At present, for the registration of tomato cultivars, disease resistance is evaluated against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici race 0 and 1 (FOL0 and FOL1), Verticillium dahliae, Tomato mosaic virus race 0 and Meloydogine incognita. Here we describe the resistance tests carried out on tomato cultivars in our laboratories from 2003 to 2009. We tested 201 cultivars corresponding to about 1400 resistance assays.
From 2003 to 2009 the number of cultivars that resulted resistant to the different pathogens remained stable: about 95 and 60% of cultivars tested are resistant to FOL0 and FOL1 respectively; the percentage of resistant cultivars to V. dahlia ranges from 55 to 75% and those resistant to mosaic range from 41 to 63%. The percentage of cultivars resistant to M. incognita ranges from 35 to 74%. Actually resistance tests are bioassays and they can be influenced by external factors, they can be time consuming and the resistance assessment may be difficult to be expressed.
The International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV) is examining the use of biomolecular techniques as an alternative methodology to evaluate plant resistance to pathogens.
Because of the increasing of DUS costs and of the possibility to detect only those genes whose insertion by the breeding programs is known, the CPVO has concluded that the adoption of biomolecular techniques is not appropriate at the present time.
