CONTROL OF PYRENOCHAETA LYCOPERSICI AND MELOIDOGYNE INCOGNITA ON TOMATO BY ECO-COMPATIBLE TREATMENTS

Abstract
Severe corky root symptoms have frequently been found in association with attacks of Meloidogyne spp. both under field and protected conditions.
Results of soil disinfestation by the use of ozone and a new promising biological control agent, the fungus Aphanocladium album, isolate MX-95, are reported in this work.
The trials were undertaken in a plastic-house, naturally infested with P. lycopersici and M. incognita. Treatments were applied in each trial by the sub-irrigation system.
In the first trial treatments were: a) gaseous ozone applied for 9 h at 1 ppm concentration in pre-transplant and b) gaseous ozone applied in pre- and post-transplant for 9 and 4.5 h, respectively, at 1 ppm.
In the second trial the treatments with A. album, isolate MX-95, were: a) at transplant + 3 treatments in post-transplant and b) dipping of tomato roots in the fungal suspension of the isolate MX-95 for 5 min before transplant + 3 treatments in post-transplant.
In both trials untreated soil and dazomet treated soil were used as controls.
At the end of the experiments tomato yield was recorded and severity of corky root, on the main and secondary roots, and root gall index caused by the nematode were assessed according to a 0-5 scale.
Soil nematode population density was also determined by processing 0.5-L soil samples.
All ozone and A. album, isolate MX-95, treatments significantly decreased severity of corky root, root gall index and soil nematode population in comparison to the untreated controls.
All treatments significantly increased tomato yield in comparison to untreated control.
