SUSCEPTIBILITY, IN OPEN FIELD, OF PROCESSING AND CHERRY TOMATO CULTIVARS TO BACTERIAL SPECK

Abstract
Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato (Pst) is the causal agent of bacterial speck of tomato.
Symptoms consist of necrotic spots on leaves and fruits.
Susceptibility to natural infections of Pst of 52 processing tomato cultivars, was evaluated in 2002 in a field in southern Italy.
Moreover, susceptibility to Pst of cherry tomato cultivars was evaluated in 2002 and 2003 in two fields in southern Italy too.
Phytopathometric relieves were performed on the fruits at harvesting.
No symptoms were observed on six cultivars of peeled tomato and on six cultivars of paste tomato.
The absence of symptoms on these cultivars was due, for the major part, to the Pto resistant gene or to the latest developing of the symptoms on the fruits.
The most strong attaches on tomato fruits were observed on other six cultivars of peeled tomato (incidence from 6.5 to 2.0%) and on three cultivars of paste tomato (incidence from 3.75 to 2.0%). Three susceptible cultivars were indicated as resistant to Pst by seed-constitutors.
Probably, loss of resistance of these cultivars is due to loss or mutations of the Pto gene.
Differences in susceptibility to Pst were observed for cherry tomato genotypes.
Highest incidence was observed on fruits of Altavilla, whereas lowest incidence was observed on fruits of Mignon and ISI 40285. Very high incidence of Pst damages were observed in the field of Benevento.
