BACTERIAL SPOT RACE T4 RESISTANCE AND YIELD ENHANCEMENT IN TOMATOES CONFERRED BY THE PEPPER BS2 GENE IN FLORIDA FIELD TRIALS

Abstract
The Bs2 gene from pepper, Capsicum annuum, confers disease resistance to the bacterial leaf spot pathogen, Xanthomonas perforans. This gene when transferred to tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) enhances resistance in both greenhouse and field trials.
In the current study, field trials inoculated with bacterial spot race T4 were conducted over two years and hemizygous and homozygous tomato lines expressing the Bs2 gene were found to have significantly less disease severity than the non-transformed control cultivar VF36 and three commercial susceptible cultivars.
Assessment of yield revealed that homozygous and hemizygous Bs2-containing lines had greater fruit production than VF36. These data demonstrate the successful inter-generic transfer of an R gene and that the Bs2 trait can provide effective, environmentally-benign protection to tomatoes in field production.
It is anticipated that this protection may be deployed to avoid widespread horticultural losses due to bacterial leaf spot.
Bs2 is currently being transformed into a Florida adapted tomato parent line Fla. 8000. Fla. 8000 is resistant to bacterial spot race T3 and is a parent in Fla. 8314. Fla. 8314 has had very good marketable fruit production in numerous yield trials.
Commercial deployment of tomato cultivars transformed with Bs2 is discussed.
