THE EFFECT OF CERTAIN LEGUME ON THE POPULATION LEVEL OF ROOT KNOT NEMATODE MELOIDOGYNE INCOGNITA IN TOMATO FIELD

Abstract
A field experiment was conducted to reduce the population level of root knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita using a mulching system.
Five different kinds of legumes were tested, two of them were promising. Vicia faba L. and Lupinus termis L. both reduced the population of root knot nematode to a very low level, when each legume was planted alone or in combination.
Each of the tested legumes was sown in the beginning of September in a field that was naturally infested with M. incognita. In early summer, fruits were collected from each crop, then the green parts were converted into plant mulch by mowing immediately before tomato planting.
Tomato plants cultivated under the treated land (mulching system) were more vigorous and produced higher yields, than those grown without mulching, the population level of M. incognita was significantly reduced comparing with those without treatment.
Also this system reduces soil erosion, soil water evaporation, lowering soil temperature during summer, and provide the soil with a good amount of nitrogen.
When root explant culture from tomato, faba bean and termis were compared under tissue culture conditions for hatching percentage and juveniles penetration of M. incognita, it was found out that much lower number of galls and egg masses were recognized in faba bean and termis comparing with tomato plant as a control, that may indicate that both legume crops are a poor host for root knot nematode M. incognita. So, both can be recommended to use in crop rotation system in IPM program to reduce the population level of this pest.
