EFFECT OF STORAGE TEMPERATURE AND GIBBERELLIC ACID ON GERMINATION OF SUGAR APPLE (ANNONA SQUAMOSAL L.) SEEDS

Abstract
The storage of sugar apple seeds was evaluated for 2.5 months under room temperature (24±5°C) and low-temperature (4±1°C), and seed soaking with gibberellic acid (GA3) at five concentrations (400, 450, 500, 550 and 600 ppm). Germination and seedling vigour were evaluated at 38°C and 80% relative humidity.
No association between viability and percent germination was found.
The moisture content of the stored seeds under both environments was within favorable limits for germination.
Seed soaking with GA3 positively affected the percent germination and the germination rate.
Seedling vigour was negatively affected by 600 ppm of GA3. The best treatments that promoted germination were room temperature storage with 400 ppm GA3 (83.68%) and room temperature storage with 500 ppm GA3 (83.46%). These treatments had more than 50% germination 10 days after sowing.
Low-temperature storage reduced the percent germination but had no effect on germination rate neither on seedling vigour.
The treatments that promoted the best seedling vigor expression were those that involved cold-temperature storage with 400 and 450 ppm GA3. Our results indicated that seed storage in combination with GA3 treatment overcame dormancy.
