Abstract
When, in 1950, it has been set on the breeding program for the apricot varieties one could see the following deficiencies of the main grown apricot varieties:
- the die-back of the young trees on a large scale due especially to diseases susceptibility and a poor acclimatization ability under various ecological conditions;
- low and very inconstant yields from year to year as a consequence of flower buds injury caused by late winter frosts ;
- a short period for fresh consumption and fruit processing due to lack of varieties with early and late ripening season ;
- low fruit quality (small size, poor skin colour and flesh firmness).
One of the first objectives in the apricot breeding program was to obtain new varieties with a late blooming time induced by a longer dormancy of the flower buds and correlated with a better resistance to temperature fluctuations early in the spring.
