Abstract
The apricot is notable culture for fruit production in Yugoslavia (total trees 2,3 millions; bearing trees 1,9 millions). However, its production is deficiency (yearly about 25 000 tons) and unstable (in 1961 the highest 48,800 tons and the lowest in 1948 9,350 toins). The reason of these are unadapted apricot cvs at microlocation, choice of unsuitable combination between the cultivars and rootstocks, etc. (Paunovic, 1970 a, b., 1974, 1977, 1978 a., Paunovic and Kapetanovic, 1980). In Yugoslavia there are very convenient location for regular and high apricot production.
Because of the real possibility to significantly increase apricot production in Yugoslavia as well as to get biological and economical better apricot cultivars at the Fruit Research Institute in Cacak a systematic apricot breeding has been conducted from 1950 till now.
This is of particular importance, both theoretical and practical, as so far no one has studied this problem in Yugoslavia and in the foreign countries only fragmentary data can be found.
Also because there is no possibility to get some better and more convenient new apricot selections for commercial growing from other countries than the existing standard apricot cultivars (Large Early, Hungarian Best, Kecskemeter Rose, etc.) in Yugoslavia (Paunovic, 1956, 1967, 1970 a, b; 1978 a, b; Paunovic and Gavrilovic, 1962, Paunovic et al., 1974 ; Paunovic and Kapetanovic, 1980).
