APRICOT ASSORTMENT PERFECTION IN MOLDAVIA
This fact shortened the consumption period, made the realization and fruit processing difficult.
Consumption season enlargement of this valuable breed became possible when varieties Kishinev Early and Kostiugensky, which occupy at present cosiderable areas in the new plantations of the Republic, were raised as well as the perspective varieties Detsky and Yantarny.
The production of the Republic however, needs a set of early and late ripening self-fruitful varieties with high winterhardiness and disease-resistance, with high quality smart fruit for universal usage.
A special attention, when establishing new apricot orchards, should be paid to the varieties, and the proportion of early and superearly varieties ripening in June simultaneously with the late mazzard cherry, be increased.
Mid- and late ripening variety assortment should be enlarged.
These are the problems the workers of Moldavian Fruit Growing Research Institute — Isakova M. D., Shafir G. M., Kropis A. P., Gatina A. S., Litvak A. I., Negru Y. I., Ponomarchenko N. S., Soloviova N. A. — are dealing with.
A great selective work is being done at the same with the study of a considerable variety set available in the collection plantations, as selection of initial parents, hybridization and use of free-pollinated seeds together with further selection are remaining the main ways of variety composition improvement.
When creating the early and superearly forms Samarkand Superearly and Ahrory (early ripening Central Asiatic varieties) and Komsomoletz and Khersonsky 6280 (large-fruited high quality European varieties) were used.
Varieties representing different ecological and geographical groups: Smena, Pearl (mid-ripening); Red Partisan, Kostiugensky, Ruhi Juvanon I, Khramov’s Late (late ripening); and Koch pshar (super late) were used to create mid- and late ripening forms.
