Abundance, distribution and species diversity of macrofungi (mushrooms) in Benue State, Nigeria

Abstract
The study surveyed and investigated the abundance, distribution and species diversity of mushrooms species in Benue state, Nigeria.
A multistage random sample technique was used in the selection of the study locations.
Two local governments were randomly selected from three agricultural zones of Benue State in which a district was randomly selected from each of the local government areas.
A reconnaissance survey was carried out prior to the commencement of the survey.
Data collected from the study were subjected to Shannon-Wiener diversity, Pielou’s Evenness, Simpson Concentration and Margalef’s species richness indices.
A total of 4043 macrofungi species belonging to 83 genera 25 families, 8 order, 3 classes and 2 phylum were recorded.
The Shanon-weiner diversity, Pielou’s evenness, Margalef and Simpson concentration indices significantly (p≤0.05) range between 1.39 and 2.66, 0.54 and 0.82, 1.74 and 4.07 and 0.11 and 0.43, respectively across the study area.
The most abundant mushroom families include Agaricaceae (15), Amanitaceae (11) and Boletaceae (11), while the least abundant families include Auriculariaceae, Cantharellaceae, Clavulinaceae, Geoglossaceae, Lyophyllaceae, Mycenaceae, Pterulaceae, Sparasidaceae and Suillaceae. Based on the findings of this research study, Benue state has a rich diversity of mushrooms which offers huge socio-economic potentials.
This study has also provided a baseline reference for further ecological, ethno mycological and diversity study of mushrooms in the state.
