Abstract
Beans (Phaseolus spp.) are subjected to chilling stress (below 10°C) at seedling stage under field conditions when they are grown in early spring and at the end of summer periods due to early and last frost, respectively.
Breeding for chilling tolerance in beans is top priority to extend growth season of the crop.
The current study was aimed at phenotyping and genotyping for chilling tolerance in bean landraces including P. vulgaris L. and P. coccineous L. A collection of 130 landraces was tested for chilling tolerance (5°C) under controlled environment conditions at seedling stage.
Chilling damage was assessed on the bases of visual damage scale, cell membrane leakage, chlorophyll measurement and leaf color.
For molecular characterization, 20 cold tolerant landraces of the collection were studied by the sequence related amplified polymorphism (SRAP). Results revealed that there was considerable variation for chilling tolerance among landraces.
Of 130 land races, 123, BN 56, Erzc 2, HK 40, HK 46, ML 6 and TR 64995 were selected as cold tolerant since they were free from cold damage.
These landraces can be safely grown from the beginning of spring to the end of summer because they are not damaged by early and late chilling stress.
