Abstract
Different trials with ornamental plants show the beneficial effects of biostimulants on plant growth and flowering.
Biostimulants can also help to reduce the use of mineral fertilizers in the production of ornamentals.
The hypothesis was that reducing mineral fertilization and adding biostimulants could improve the growth and flowering of perennials.
This study aimed to find out the influence of biostimulants on the growth and flowering of container-grown European Michaelmas daisy (Aster amellus L. ‘Rudolf Goethe’). The experiment had four treatments: 1) reduced mineral fertilization as control; 2) micro-algae containing biostimulant Allgrow® + reduced mineral fertilization; 3) seaweed Ecklonia maxima extract and mineral NK fertilizer containing biostimulant Basfoliar® Aktiv + reduced mineral fertilization; 4) amino acid biostimulant Delfan® Plus + reduced mineral fertilization.
The Allgrow treatment was watered with 2.5%, Basfoliar Aktiv and Delfan Plus treatment with 0.2% biostimulant solution.
The mineral fertilization was by watering.
The bare-root daisy plants were planted in peat-based substrate into 1-L plastic containers.
In spring, plants were grown in an unheated greenhouse, and in summer, in open field conditions.
The first watering with biostimulants was three weeks after planting.
All biostimulants significantly increased the plant height and the number of flowers and flower buds compared to control.
European Michaelmas daisies treated with biostimulants had on average 1.8 to 2.5 times more flowers and flower buds compared to control plants.
The influence of biostimulants on leaf SPAD value was inconsistent during the experiment.
