Postharvest durability and yellowing control of alstroemeria: the role of chlorine

Abstract
Alstroemeria presents a challenge in its postharvest phase since the leaves tend to yellow before the flower’s senescence.
Despite research efforts to develop protocols on this topic, producers still face uncertainties regarding the best choice of preservatives for postharvest preservation.
Some commercial products present chlorine in composition, although the effectiveness is unknown.
This study aimed to identify the effects of the use of chlorine on the solution for postharvest preservation of Alstroemeria hybrida L. ‘Akemi’. The stems were kept in sealed plastic vases containing 0.5 L of preservative solution in a cold chamber (4°C) for 3 days and then transferred to the room (20±3°C). The results indicated significant differences when comparing the different water sources used in solution preparation.
The use of 0.001 g L-1 of chlorine as a preservative solution extended the postharvest longevity of alstroemeria stems by 4 more days compared to the control.
