First report of Bougainvillea mealybug Phenacoccus peruvianus Granara de Willink in Montenegro

Abstract
The Bougainvillea mealybug Phenacoccus peruvianus Granara de Willink was first reported in Montenegro in July 2023. It was found in several localities on the southeastern Montenegrin seacoast, in private gardens, and in one nursery.
The main host plant was Bougainvillea spp.; in one locality, it was found on kumquat Fortunella japonica. The mealybugs showed a preference for settling on the undersides of leaves and on the twigs and stems.
Apart from honeydew secretion, which serves as a substrate for the development of sooty mold, leaf loss was registered as a symptom of damage. P. peruvianus originates from South America.
In Europe, it was first reported in Spain (1999) and later was found particularly in the Mediterranean basin.
