Abstract
Chlorophytum comosum arching stolons are greatly durable when held in water and they may be considered as a new specialty cut ornamental foliage.
The floriculture industry always seeks new species or specialty crops to increase sales in niche markets.
In the present study, we tested the potential of C. comosum stolons to be stored at 1, 3, and 7°C for 30 days by evaluating the physiological responses of tissues and recording any chilling damages from these treatments.
Fresh weights of all stolons increased at 1, 3, and 7°C throughout the 30-day evaluation period.
Slight changes were recorded in color parameters of plantlets at storage.
Stolons held at 1°C showed a decrease in a* (from -10.21 to -12.79) and L* (from 42.24 to 34.50) values, but significant increases in b* (from 16.67 to 19.58). In contrast, stolons held at 3 and 7°C showed significant increases in a*, b* and L* values.
Chlorophyll fluorescence values (Fv/Fm) ranged from 0.73 to 0.74 after 28 d at 1°C, indicating no damage in the photosystem II. Respiration rates of stolons decreased gradually from day 0 to day 18. We suggest that cut C. comuosum stolons be stored for long periods at 1°C before they are sold at the flower markets.
