Impact of ornamentals for the one health concept during Anthropocene

Abstract
Early on aesthetics played a major role for humans that led to the creation of ornamentals.
From their original function being a decorative element, they have been advanced to be important for people’s well-being and health as well.
Out of the known 374,000 plant species, only 10% are being cultivated for various purposes such as food, feed, and ornamentals.
The technical advancements in genome sequencing accompanied by sophisticated bioinformatics pipelines revealed that seemingly healthy ornamentals could carry loads of viruses and/or viroids.
Assuming that each plant species represents a host for at least one virus species it becomes clear that the currently 2000 plant viruses listed by the International Committee on Virus Taxonomy (ICTV) represent only the tip of the iceberg.
Special attention must be paid to virus species and isolates that can be easily transmitted to other horticultural or agricultural crop plants causing diseases and epidemics.
Therefore, it is justified that plant health has been incorporated into the One Health concept.
For ornamentals, humans are a potent vector for spreading virus diseases via global trade and travel.
Knowledge of virus biology, phytosanitary measures, and efficient diagnostics are needed to prevent uncontrolled virus evolution and spread.
The European Virus Archive (EVA) provides a global network with expertise in animal, human, and plant virology.
EVA’s web-based catalogue (https://www.european-virus-archive.com/evag-portal) gives access to viruses, derived materials, and services.
The EVA-consortium guarantees the safety, quality, and characterization of deposited material in the catalogue.
