Effect of cutting origin, season of collection, and treatment on rooting of shoot-tip cuttings of Salvia tomentosa Mill.

Abstract
Salvia tomentosa Mill. is a strongly aromatic perennial sage, with medicinal and ornamental value.
The propagation of the species by stem cuttings was investigated.
Shoot tip cuttings, collected either from greenhouse-grown mother plants or from wild plants, in November 2020, February, May, and August 2021, were treated either with Rhizopon (0.5% w/w IBA) dusting powder or by immersing their base for 1 min in an indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) solution (50% ethanol) of concentration 0 (control), 500, 1500, 3000, 4500 or 6000 mg L‑1. Then, they were placed for rooting in a 1:1 (v/v) peat-perlite substrate, in the mist, for 2 weeks and remained on the greenhouse bench in a semi-shaded position for another 4 weeks.
The cuttings of both origins rooted equally efficiently, at rates higher than 75%, especially in autumn and spring, when rates exceeded 90%. IBA treatment had no significant effect on the rooting rate of cuttings derived from wild plants, except in winter, when the use of Rhizopon induced the best response.
In cuttings derived from greenhouse plants, rooting was indifferent to the IBA treatment only in spring, while in all other seasons the treatment with Rhizopon or immersion in an IBA solution at a concentration ≤3000 mg L‑1, depending on the season, induced higher rooting rates.
Regarding the fresh and dry weight of the above-ground and underground part of the rooted cutting, higher values were observed in cuttings derived from native plants compared to those from greenhouse plants in the respective seasons, as well as in cuttings treated with rooting hormone than with the control.
In conclusion, S. tomentosa cuttings are amenable to rooting throughout the year, most effectively in autumn and spring, after being treated with Rhizopon dusting powder or immersion for 1 min in a solution of 500-3000 mg L‑1 IBA.
