Abstract
During the last four years a decision support system (DSS) for potplant nurseries has been developed in close cooperation between researchers and practitioners.
This DSS offers the possibility to construct or to modify a production plan by "trial and error" (simulation) or by optimization.

The optimization model within the DSS can be characterized by the name "transition model", because the essential operation in the model optimizes the TRANSITION of the firm’s PRESENT or ACTUAL production situation towards a FUTURE production plan.

This future plan can be predetermined by the manager or can be determined in a previous optimization.
Both optimizations are performed, using the technique of linear programming (LP).

The system, implemented on several types of microcomputers, is already in practice in a number of potplant nurseries.
