Abstract
Thidiazuron (N-phenyl-N’-(1,2,3-thiadiazol-5-y1) urea, applied to Kyoho grape (Vitis vinifera x Vitis labruscana cv.
Kyoho) single bud cuttings in November enhanced callus formation.
Callus was visible on the 6th day after treatment.
The percent of callus growth increased linearly with the increase in concentration of thidiazuron from 6 days after treatment and reached a plateau at 12 days after treatment.
The effect was evaluated at several application rates (0, 25, 50, 100 and 200 μM of technical grade thidiazuron). 100 μM was sufficient to induce maximum callus growth.

In a parallel experiment the effect of thidiazuron on bud-break was compared with that of 1% cyanamide (H2CN2) – a known bud-break agent.
After 16 days 76.5% of cyanamide-treated buds had broken, compared with a maximum of 29.4% of those treated with thidiazuron at 100 μM.
