Abstract
Improvements in wine grape composition were sought by controlling regrowth of trunk suckers in ‘Okanagan Riesling’ by paclobutrazol (PBZ), applied in latex paint at 3 levels (0, 250, 500 mg.l-1) to suckered vine trunks.
Suckers per vine decreased linearly with increased PBZ concentration, while berry weight and ºBrix varied directly with concentration.
Efficiency of PBZ for sucker regrowth control was not as long-lived as that of associated naphthaleneacetic acid treatments.
Advancement of fruit maturity in summer-hedged ‘Riesling’ and ‘Gewürztraminer’ vines by PBZ sprays was achieved by effectively reducing lateral shoot growth.
Consistent increases over unsprayed vines of both cultivars were observed in terms of ºBrix.
