Abstract
Paclobutrazol application to June-bearing strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch. cv.
Honeoye) after planting in 1985 at 250 and 500 ppm reduced runner production more than 80%, increased branch crown formation more than 2-fold, and had no effect on crown dry weight.
Runner suppression by paclobutrazol persisted through 1986. The total number of axillary buds developing into either runners or branch crowns was reduced by paclobutrazol treatment over 2 seasons.
Application of 100 ppm GA3 at first bloom in 1986 increased runner production and leaf petiole length of inhibitor-treated plants, reversing the inhibition of axillary bud development, but had no sustained growth effects.
Paclobutrazol reduced yield and fruit number per plant in 1986 and 1987. The single GA3 application reduced mean fruit weight in 1986, and increased yield per plant and fruit number in 1987. Ribbon-row grown plants at within-row densities of 7.6, 15.2, 22.9, and 30.5 cm, treated with 200 ppm paclobutrazol after planting, exhibited no inhibitor effect on yield per plant.
As density increased, however, crown weight, yield, and fruit number per plant declined.
Yield per ha was a maximum at 15.2 cm.
