Abstract
Application of pollen, a plant growth regulator mix (N, N-diphenylurea [DPU] 300 ppm, 2-naphthoxyacetic acid (NOXA) 50 ppm, gibberellic acid [GA3] 500 ppm) and a combined treatment all stimulated initial fruit retention but most parthenocarpically set fruits eventually abscinded.
The application of pollen plus PGR mix caused the greatest fruit retention on trees which had borne a crop in the previous season, but did not increase set compared with pollination alone on previously non-bearing trees.
Previously non-bearing trees produced more flowers with a long effective pollination period and greater female fertility.
Final fruit retention was determined by crop history, fruit setting treatment and competition within the tree.
