STIMULATION OF FRUIT SET OF ‘MORITA’ NAVEL ORANGE WITH BRASSINOLIDE

Navel oranges grown in the field even in southern Japan often show abnormal abortion of fruits due to the cold environment.
Flowers of ‘Morita’ navel oranges were treated with brassinolide solution at anthesis.
Fruit set of trees treated with 0.01 ppm brassinolide increased by ca. 5 and 2.5 times respectively when surveyed 50 days after treatment.
Trees previously grown in the open showed a bigger response to brassinolide than those kept in a plastic house until the previous year.

Treatment at two months after anthesis also resulted in higher rate of fruit set.
At harvest there were no differences in quality between treated and untreated fruits.
