PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS OF THE ROOT COLLAR MODULATION IN HORMONE TRANSPORT IN APPLE

Abstract
Maiden, two- and three-year-old apple trees were treated with growth regulators applied in lanoline to the root collar region in the spring.
Single applications of GA3 and anti-oxidant BHT (butylated hydroxy-toluene) brought about mostly a stimulation of tree growth or branching.
A vast and long lasting suppression of growth was observed after single treatments with paclobutrazol and TIBA. TIBA, in addition, evoked leaf and shoot epinasty and induced flower bud formation on the maiden trees.
The introduction of growth regulators into young trees via the root collar will protect fruits against immediate contact with chemicals and their absorption.
