Abstract
The relationship between vegetative growth and flower bud initiation in apples is re-examined in the light of existing work and some recent trials with growth retardants.
Daminozide and ethephon treatments were applied to non bearing Red Delicious trees in five separate trials.
Reduction in vegetative growth was always closely correlated with increased flowering the following year.
This result is discussed in terms of previously published arguments for and against an accepted negative relationship between growth and flowering.
