Eleven-year-old apple trees cv.
McIntosh sprayed for eight successive years with SADH or a mixture of SADH and ethephon, as well as eight-year-old pear trees cvs Conference, Clapp’s Favourite and Beurré Hardy sprayed for five successive years with chlormequat, SADH, paclobutrazol or with a mixture of these chemicals and ethephon showed, after the severe winter of 1986–1987, freeze injuries similar to those on unsprayed trees.
Sporadically more serious injuries than in control trees appeared in various parts of the shoots of trees sprayed with retardants and they affected various tissues without any definite tendency.
