Abstract
There is a complex interrelationship between plant number and crops structure, technological procedure used, yield and profitability.
After an evaluation of the results of long-term experiments on harvest methods and plant density of green asparagus standardized yield function, a cost function and profit function were found.
The investigations show that the fully mechanized harvesting of green asparagus envisaged is dependent upon attaining a high plant density of specific varieties, the mechanized processing of the heterogeneously composed harvested crop as well as the utilization of the total field yield.
The profitable production of crops is in view of the present selective harvesting by hand or harvest wagons dependent upon a plant density of about 30.000 plants per hectare for the thickspeared ‘Helios’ (planted crop) and about 45.000 plants per hectare for a prolific thin-speared male cultivar.
