Abstract
It has been shown that the soil mycetes mainly responsible for asparagus decline in Italy are Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. asparagi and to a lesser extent Fusarium moniliforme. A great variability has been found in the strains of Fusarium oxysporum.

Resistance trials were carried out with highly-virulent and medium-virulent Fusarium strains on material selected in Italy and abroad.
Commercial varieties and hybrids were tolerant to the more virulent strains, whereas a certain tolerance was seen using medium-virulent strains.
Indigenous material obtained from wild asparagus plants was also examined and gave satisfactory results as regards resistance to the most pathogenic strains of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. asparagi.
