Abstract
A single spray of chlormequat at 5, 000 or 10, 000 ppm strongly inhibited growth and induced abundant flower initiation at the apices of the long shoots.
As a result, total shoot growth and the number of terminals were reduced in the following year, though the percentage of very long shoots was increased.
In the second season after spraying the trees made very vigorous growth, but failed to initiate flowers.
Terminal shoots on sprayed trees stopped growth three weeks earlier than those on the controls, and they contained more soluble nitrogen.
