Abstract
Treatment of upright shoots of Prunus avium L. cv. ‘Bing’ with SADH reduced the amount of GA-like substances which could be extracted or diffused from their apices, but the same treatment had no effect on GA levels of the apices from laterally oriented shoots.
Less biologically active material was collected by diffusion from the apices of horizontal as opposed to upright growing shoots, irrespective of the orientation of the apices during the 24-hour diffusion period.
Treatments of ‘Bing’ apex extractives with peptidase did not yield additional activity, but when the water phase of such extracts was treated with beta-glucosidase additional GA-like substances were produced.
However, no such bound GA was detected in the diffusates from ‘Bing’ apices, though similar diffusates from ‘Bigarreau Burlat’ contained both free and bound GA. In addition, the alcohol-insoluble substances from ‘Bigarreau Burlat’, following hydrolysis with peptidase, gave substances which educed alpha-amylase activity in the barley endosperm.
