Abstract
Fruit thinning trials with ‘Golden Delicious’ over the years 1962–1971 have shown that it is possible to double the yield of large (>70 mm) fruits, to improve colour and to increase the content of soluble solids and titratable acid.
Hand thinning produced better results than chemical thinning with NAAm or carbaryl.
Chemical thinning increased the percentage of fruits with bitter pit, though this was followed by a compensatory decrease in the following year.
Carbaryl increased russeting when applied within 2 weeks of full bloom.
