ESTABLISHMENT OF A HORTICULTURAL EXPORT INDUSTRY IN THE TROPICS

In recent years there has been an increasing interest in moving the production of several horticultural crops to the tropics.
The advantages are many: a yearround growing season, favourable climate, large acreages of land available, enough labour and lower salary levels than in Western Europe.

Transport of the produce has also become cheaper and quicker.
The produce must be suitable for transportation, be in adequate amounts and have a high market price.

The crops must be grown in soil free from high contents of certain salts and well-drained.
Temperature should be suitable and water supply adequate.

Fertilizers and pesticides must always be readily available.

As produce grown in the tropics for consumers in Europe or North America is in general air freighted there must be an airport in the neighbourhood of the production area giving regular connections with the market.

Production and marketing must be run by trained personnel.
