BREEDING TOMATOES FOR THE LOWLAND HUMID REGIONS OF WEST AFRICA

A virus-like disease is believed to be the major deterrent to the development of large-scale tomato production and tomato paste industries in the lowland humid regions of West Africa.
The disease occurs in epidemic proportions most of the year, but usually it is almost absent from late August to late October.

A breeding programme aimed at developing cultivars resistant to this disease and adapted to humid tropical conditions has been established.
Two sources of tolerance to the disease have been identified and are being used in the development of new cultivars.
Further screening for new sources of resistance is being done on a germplasm collection of more than 2.100 entries.
