Abstract
In the past, the Ghanaian Culture made it imperative that people lived in family homes and family communities.
These homes and communities were very large, crowded and had little or no outside space for home gardens.
However, under present conditions the family and community living is broken down and now the individual lives in isolation with a wife and few children in homes with more space for gardening.
The development of home gardens in Ghana from the time of the missionaries in the 19th century to the present, and the success of its development among Ghanaian communities is discussed.
