Abstract
This paper is largely based on 4 years work on vegetables in Egypt, concerned with the establishment of rational competitive cash crop production.

There are two basic requirements for good plant growth: a growing medium allowing normal root growth and with a diluted solution of balanced nutrients; and optimal temperature and light.

For export to Europe, the important period is from November to April/May for beans, tomatoes, peppers, artichokes and potatoes.
But climatic advantage alone is not enough for the promotion of intensive production.
