Abstract
The northern states of Nigeria cover an area of 484.361 km2. Because the climate ranges from the Sahel in the north to the Southern Guinea Savannah in the south, horticultural research is carried out in all the ecological zones.
The research is coordinated by the Institute for Agricultural Research in close cooperation with the states Ministeries of Agriculture.
Vegetable research is confined to tomatoes, onions and peppers; with tree crops, the main emphasis is on mango and citrus.
The research objectives, progress and the extension of the Institute’s findings to the farmers are described.
