Abstract
Using Zizyphus jujuba Mill. cv.
Hunanjidanzao as plant material, female gametophyte development was observed through paraffin sectioning and statistical analysis of blossom and fruit drop was carried out after natural pollination.
The results indicated that the blossom and fruit drop conditions were severe in Zizyphus jujuba Mill. cv.
Hunanjidanzao; unfertilized and poorly developed flowers fell out in 6 to 7 days after blossoming; fruit began to drop in 13 to 14 days after first blossoming and was at the drop peak in 22 to 38 days; rates of total blossom drop and total fruit drop were 76.89 and 96.13%, respectively, and fruit setting rate was only 0.89%. The embryonic development of Zizyphus jujuba Mill. cv.
Hunanjidanzao belonged to Onagrad type, endosperm development belonged to nuclear type; at the stage of zygote developing into proembryo, before formation of cell wall of endosperm, abortion due to poorly developed fetus and endosperm was observed and the abortion rate reached 82.22%. This study indicated that the abortion of fetus and endosperm in the embryonic development was the key factor resulting in the blossom and fruit drop in Zizyphus jujuba Mill. cv.
Hunanjidanzao.
