Abstract
The existence of synonym and homonym, caused by divarication in classification and lack of communication, has long been hindering the academic exchange of genus jujube.
To resolve the problem and to stream line the academic exchange in this important crop, an extensive survey and textual research on the scientific and English names of genus jujube and its main species were carried out.
Attempts were also made to gather information on the native and vernacular names being used for genus Ziziphus and its different species world wide.
Eight scientific names had been given to the genus jujube, of which only Ziziphus and Zizyphus are still in existence making up 72.81 and 27.07%, respectively.
About 16 scientific names have been used for Chinese jujube, 5 of them are still alive, i.e. Z. jujuba Mill., Z. jujuba Mill. var. inermis (Bunge) Rehd., Z. sativa Gatern., Z. sativa Gaertn. var. inermis (Bunge) Schneid. and Z. vulgaris Lam.
Indian jujube or ber have got 9 scientific names, of which Z. mauritiana Lam., Z. jujuba Lam., Z. xylopyrus Hochst., Z. abyssinica Hochst. are still in use.
Textual research shows that the correct scientific name for the genus jujube, Chinese jujube and Indian jujube are Ziziphus Mill., Z. jujuba Mill. and Z. mauritiana Lam., respectively. Z. jujuba Lam. is a synonym of Z. mauritiana Lam. and a homonym of Z. jujuba Mill.
