Morphological characterization of Ziziphus jujuba Mill. fruits of some local genotypes from Dobrogea

Abstract
Ziziphus is a diverse genus of spiny shrubs and small trees in the Rhamnaceae family.
It encompasses over 200 species, including the well-known Chinese and Indian jujubes.
This study focuses on the jujube populations introduced by Greek and Roman settlers in the Dobrogea region of Romania.
The researchers have identified and documented specific indigenous variations of Ziziphus jujuba in this region.
The adaptability of the jujube plant to various environments has been a subject of interest, leading to the examination of different genotypes.
In this study, the researchers recorded measurements of fruits and seeds from various local genotypes, revealing significant variations in length, diameter, and weight.
Among the genotypes studied, the ‘Ostrov’ genotype had the biggest fruits, while the ‘Mahmudia 2’ genotype exhibited the smallest ones.
Interestingly, the ‘Bugeac’, ‘Jurilovca’, and ‘Mahmudia’ genotypes were found to have small fruits with viable seeds.
This finding suggested that these genotypes could serve as valuable rootstocks in future cultivation efforts.
Rootstocks play a crucial role in horticulture as they provide a foundation for grafting and can influence the resulting plants’ growth, productivity, and disease resistance.
Overall, this study highlighted the diversity and characteristics of jujube genotypes in the Dobrogea region of Romania.
The findings contribute to understanding different jujube genotypes’ adaptability and potential uses, particularly regarding fruit size and seed viability.
Further research and cultivation efforts could explore the practical applications of these genotypes, such as their use as rootstocks or the development of new cultivars with desirable traits.
